K&N Typhoon Tests

These tests are interesting insofar as temperature is concerned, but the Great Intake Face-Off and its follow-on event, the Great Intake Face-Off -- Post Exhaust are the definitive intake tests for the entire Chrysler LX platform.

I was pleased to attend both events and privileged to be one of the dyno'd test vehicles at the second GIFOPE event.  Use these rigorous tests to make your intake decision, and thank LXForums' member CoolVanilla for his hard work setting this all up and making it happen.

Don Emry's tests on the Magnum's cold air intake system seem pretty definitive in the sense that they answer the question of what the air temp is like running into a stock Magnum.

However, what happens when you put in an aftermarket intake, particularly a K & N Typhoon, which is what I have installed.

  • Does the drawing of air from the top of the engine compartment rather than from the Magnum's original location low in the front have an adverse impact on temperature?
  • Does the heat generated by the engine soak into the aluminum tube of the Typhoon and heat up the air sucked into the engine?

You can draw your own conclusions.  I'll just post what I did and the pictures that go along with same and you can decide the rest for yourself.

Testing Instruments

  • A $20 'wireless' thermometer purchased from OSH.  Wireless = a remote transmitter that is connected to a wired temp sensor and reports to a second unit, which in the accompanying pictures you can see sitting atop the steering column.  The wire is long enough that the remote transmitter is actually sitting inside the car.
  • Red duct tape.  No modern scientific experiment should be without it.  Its also a festive package wrap at Christmas time.

Hey, read this:
This web site is actively used as a software test platform for my ContentMonger Pro content management software.  As such you may see weird things happen as I work, bugfix and experiment.  Hopefully it won't inconvenience you but if it does, sorry about that.  Whatever you see going on is very likely to fix itself shortly as I am aware that traffic on this site is now fairly significant.
